CAL: Clamshell projects

(Crochet * Stash-buster)

My mom and I recently joined in a Crochet Along (CAL) organized by Sandra from Cherry Heart: Clamshell Along.  The challenge is to crochet a project using her latest pattern: the Clamshell, which has a very cool and contemporary look.

My mom is making a baby blanket, and this here is the beginning stage…

Mi mamá está haciendo una manta para bebé, y estos es el comienzo…

I decided to make a tote bag.  On my first try, the project was coming out too small. Instead of frogging it and unraveling, I decided to turn it into a pencil case (just needs the lining and zipper now...)

Yo decidí hacer una bolsa para mis lanas.   En mi primer intento, el proyecto me estaba saliendo muy pequeño.  En lugar de deshacerlo, decidí convertirlo en un estuche para lápices (sólo necesita el forro y el cierre...)  

But the idea of the tote is still on…and I already started it…but with different colours, all with yarn from my stash.  Yes, this is a great stash-buster project!

Pero la idea de hacer una bolsa grande sigue firme…y ya la comencé de nuevo, pero con diferentes colores, todos con lanas acumuladas.

Bloom Coasters (pattern)

(Crochet)

As promised, here is the pattern for the “Bloom Coasters”…

Tal como lo prometí, aquí les dejo el patrón de los “Portavasos Florecientes”…  [Las instrucciones en español las encontrarán después de las de inglés]

MATERIALS

Cotton, in DK or light weight

Hook 3.5 mm

For border:

Fine cotton thread (#5 or 10)

Hook 2 or 2.5 mm

STITCHES

Ch                  Chain

Sc                   simple crochet

Dc                   double crochet (US)

2Dc tog          2 double crochet together

Sl st                Slip stitch

HOW TO:

Worked on the round…

For the main part of coaster (with DK or light weight cotton):

1. In a magic ring:  Ch3 (counts as first dc), 1dc, ch1. 

Repeat 5 times: *2dc, ch1* [Total: 6 clusters] .

2. Slip St until reaching the first space between clusters. 

Ch3 (counts as first dc), 1dc, ch2, 2dc. 

Repeat 5 times: *2dc, ch2, 2dc*

3. Slip St until reaching the first space between clusters. 

Ch3 (counts as first dc), 2dc, ch1.

Repeat 11 times: *3dc, ch1 (in space between clusters)*

4. Ch1, and sc in every st, all around.  Close with sl st. [Total: 12 clusters)

For the final border (with fine thread #5 or #10):

Start with 1sc in any st.  Repeat all around: *3ch, 2dc tog over the working sc, skip 1^st and make 1sc on 2^nd st*. Finish with a sl st on first sc. 

Weave in ends.

CÓMO HACERLO

Trabajar en redondo…

Para la parte principal del portavasos (con algodón delgado):

1. Comenzar con un anillo mágico: 3cad (que cuentas como el primer Pa), 1Pa, 1cad.

Repetir 5 veces: *2Pa, 1cad*.

2. Seguir con punto superficial hasta llegar al espacio de 1cad.

3cad (cuenta como el primer Pa), 1Pa, 2cad, 2Pa.

Repetir 5 veces: *2Pa, 2Cad, 2Pa*

3.  Seguir con punto superficial hasta llegar al espacio de 2cad.

3cad (cuenta como el primer Pa), 2Pa, 1cad.

Repetir 11 veces: *3Pa, 1cad*

4.  1cad, y 1pb en cada puntada alrededor.  Cerrar con ps.

Para el borde final (con hilo fino):

Comenzar con 1pb (en cualquier p.).  Repetir la siguiente secuencia alrededor:

*3cad, 2Paj en el mismo pb, saltearse una p. y hacer 1pb en la segunda p.  Terminar con un ps en el primer pb.

Gift: Coasters

(Crochet)

I have been playing with crochet coasters these past weeks, because I wanted to give a set to a dear friend. 

He estado haciendo pruebas de portavasos en ganchillo, porque quería regalarle un set a una amiga. 

I tried different patterns…but at the end I came up with my own version. 

Probé varios patrones, pero al final salí con una versión propia. 

I am calling it: “Bloom coasters”.  It is formed by clusters that look like petals, blooming to form a round motif.  It is a little lacy, but not too much.

Le di el nombre de “Portavasos Florecientes” a este patrón, porque está formado de grupitos de puntos altos que se asemejan a pétalos florecientes, que forman una aplicación redonda.   Es un poco calado, pero no demasiado. 

I made the whole set with cotton (DK weight) in natural color, and the border in fine cotton thread (#10), in earth tones: burnt orange, brown, beige, mustard, olive green. 

Utilicé un algodón natural delgado, y el borde lo hice de hilo fino (#10), en colores tierra: naranja oscuro, café, beige, mostaza, verde oliva. 

I am planning on making more of these…for gifts…and for my home (I want some too!).

Estoy planeando hacer más de estos…para regalos…y para mi casa (¡yo también quiero unos!). 

Next time I will be sharing here the pattern, in case any of you want to give them a try…

Blanket: Nautical Squares

(Crochet * Stash-buster)

Yeah!  I finished the “Nautical Squares” Blanket! 

¡Ya terminé la frazada de Cuadros Náuticos! 

A patchwork blanket made with 88 granny squares.

Es una frazada formada por 88 cuadros de color sólido.

Each square has 4 rows, all in one colour.  In total, I used 10 colours: 4 blues (navy, country, light and bright), 2 greys, cream, white, red and orange. 

Cada cuadro fue hecho en cuatro pasadas, en un solo color.  En total utilicé 10 colores: 4 tonos azules, 2 grises, crema, blanco, rojo y naranja. 

Then I joined all the squares with simple crochet st, in navy blue.

Luego uní los cuadros con punto bajo en azul marino. 

The border is all navy blue…except for a little detail in orange.

El borde también es azul marino, con un pequeño detalle naranja. 

I made this blanket for my nephew, for the foot of his bed (and maybe for a nap). 

Esta frazada es para mi sobrino, como pie de cama (y tal vez para la siesta).  

Baby Top in Blue & Grey

(Knit * Stash-buster)

A short-sleeved sweater for a baby boy (6 months).

Un suéter de manga corta para un bebé de seis meses. 

DK yarn in country blue, with grey stripes and borders.

Lana delgada en azul campestre, con líneas y detalles en gris.

Made from the top down, raglan style.

Hecho de arriba para abajo, estilo ranglan.

With two buttons on the front.

Con dos botones al frente.

The original pattern is an open cardigan with long sleeves, but I changed it a bit.

2 More Pincushions

(Crochet * Stash-buster)

A niece of mine is studying Fashion Design, and I thought of making a crochet pincushion for her (similar to the one I made for my mom not long ago)…

Una de mis sobrinas está estudiando diseño de modas, y pensé en hacerle un alfiletero (similar al que le hice a mi mamá hace poco).

1.  Daisy Pincushion

A pincushion with a daisy on top.

Un alfiltero con una margarita. 

I made this in a different way than my mom´s…This time, I filled a little shallow plastic tin with recycled dry ground coffee (which I learned works as well as saw dust in keeping the needles from rusting).  I covered the top of the tin with fabric... 

Éste lo hice de diferente manera que el de mi madre…En esta ocasión llené una lata pequeña con granos de café reciclado seco (el cual oí que funciona igual que el acerrin, previniendo que los alfileres se oxiden).  Luego cubrí la lata con tela…

And finally came the crochet cover, with a daisy center, and then simple crochet and moss st.

De último, le hice la cubierta de ganchillo comenzando con una margarita, y luego medios puntos.

I used DK acrylic yarn, in the following colours: white, camel, green, aqua and neon green.

Usé una lana acrílica delgada, en los siguientes colores: blanco, camello, verde, aqua y verde neón

My niece liked it…and asked me if I could make another one…

Complací a mi sobrina…tanto que me pidió si le podía hacer otro…

2. Hedgehog Pincushion

Hedgehogs are really cute creatures.  They have the perfect shape for a pincushion, given its needle-like body.

Los puercoespines son criaturas tan tiernas.  Su forma es perfecta para un alfiletero, dadas sus espinas que parecen agujas.

I had to improvise a bit, but I think it worked well…

Tuve que improvisar, pero creo que me salió bien…

I think it is so cute!

Creo que es primoroso.
